Job Description:
Patient Consultation:
Gynecologists interact with patients, listen to their medical histories, and conduct thorough examinations to assess their reproductive health. They discuss symptoms, concerns, and provide appropriate medical advice and treatment options.
Obstetric Care:
provide comprehensive prenatal, natal, and postnatal care to pregnant women. This includes monitoring the progress of the pregnancy, conducting ultrasounds, performing routine check-ups, and managing any complications that may arise during pregnancy or childbirth.
Gynecological Examinations:
perform routine screenings, such as Pap smears, breast examinations, and pelvic examinations to detect any abnormalities or signs of disease. They may also perform diagnostic tests, such as colposcopy or hysteroscopy, to further evaluate certain conditions.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
diagnose and treat various gynecological conditions and disorders, including menstrual irregularities, hormonal imbalances, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and reproductive cancers. They may prescribe medications, recommend surgical interventions, or suggest lifestyle modifications.
Family Planning and Contraception:
provide counseling on family planning methods, contraceptive options, and help individuals and couples make informed decisions about contraception and reproductive health.
Menopause Management:
Gynecologists assist women during the transition to menopause by addressing symptoms like hot flashes, mood changes, and osteoporosis. They provide guidance on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and offer strategies to manage menopausal symptoms.
Surgical Interventions:
perform surgeries related to the reproductive system when necessary. This may include procedures like hysterectomy, myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids), ovarian cystectomy, and tubal ligation, among others.
Collaboration and Referrals:
collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as urologists, oncologists, and endocrinologists, to ensure comprehensive care for their patients. They may also refer patients to specialists for further evaluation or treatment, if required.
Medical Record Maintenance:
maintain detailed and accurate medical records of their patients, including examination findings, diagnoses, treatments, and follow-up plans. This helps in providing continuity of care and allows for effective communication with other healthcare providers.
Educational requirements:
Medical degree (MBBS) from a recognized institution.
Postgraduate degree (MD/MS/DNB) in Gynaecology.
